Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants itself outside the uterus, usually in one of the fallopian tubes. This is a serious condition because the fertilized egg cannot survive and the growing tissue may cause life-threatening complications for the mother if left untreated.

Common symptoms include abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, and shoulder pain. Since an ectopic pregnancy cannot proceed normally and poses risks to the mother's health, it typically requires medical intervention. Treatment options include medication to stop the growth of the embryo or surgery to remove the ectopic pregnancy. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent complications such as rupture of the fallopian tube, which can lead to severe bleeding and shock. Regular prenatal care and awareness of symptoms can help in timely diagnosis and management of ectopic pregnancies.
